When I was in my late teens. I wanted to try my hand at being a writer. So I set aside an hour on a few days a week to sit down and just write. No structure. No idea of how it would end. I wanted to see what it was like to just write regularly. I did this for about a year and managed to write a full on amateur novella.
I only had a basic idea that the story was going to be a 'coming of age story' about an awkward & insecure teen who learns to find his place in the world, falls in love and saves the world.
I named him 'Shawn John Michael'. Because I wondered what childhood would be like for a kid who had 3 first names.
In the story, I played with the idea if existential concepts like LIFE, DEATH, FATE, TIME, MISCHIEF and others were just human-like beings who were trying to figure things out as well. And how, in the process, they would mess with our lives.
My version of DEATH isn't very original. He was of course, the cool, brooding type who seemed to know what he was doing.
Taking an inspiration from 'Death Takes A Holiday' and 'Meet Joe Black', I wrote my version of DEATH who always wore Black T's and every shade of blue denim Levi's jeans.
I guess, even then I knew, you can't go wrong with a black T and jeans.
If you'd like to know more about 'Shawn John Michael' or if you have your own stories that you'd written before, holla at me. Buy me a coffee and we can talk. :)
